I've brought this topic up before Dave accidentally wiped the board, but rumor has it that Dave signed a two-year deal in November 2007 at KSPN to do the Dave Dameshek Show and did not renegotiate it when he moved over to the podcast. It would be a really sad for me on a personal level if Dave doesn't have a decent distribution channel when the contract runs out next month.
If this is accurate, let's discuss what we think Dave might be doing in 2010, keeping in mind that the message board is still associated with him. My evaluation is that I'm not sure he has a big enough audience to draw sponsorship for a daily podcast at ESPN. If he stays, he'll probably have to generate regular Page 2 articles or other content. (#19, feel free to move this thread or delete it if it reflects poorly on the Dave or is entirely innaccurate) -------------------- Uruk-Hai: 6/30/08

I prefer DD in an audio format (I must be a masochist to want to hear that voice every day). I'm glad that ESPN has used new ways to utilize him though (mainly through Page 2). I hope they decide to bring him back or extend his contract. I really enjoy the podcasts and have enjoyed most of his Page 2 work as well (although a lot of them overlap heavily with the podcast).

I'd take him any way I can get him. "NOT GAY" /Jack Silver Sports Guy did an interview for the Huffington Post in which he said this:
Ooh la and la. It's been brought up before but I would be down with some kind of joint venture with these two and their pals -------------------- "Yo, if Dameshek wants to wear my ring, he can definitely wear my ring...cause without him there's no way we get this done."

It would be hard to imagine Simmons leaving ESPN, because I think he is getting a taste of the "producer" thing and would like to explore it further and deeper. Just a hunch.
But as a fan of Dave and Bill, I think that if they (along with the help of guys like Carolla and Kimmel) tried to develop their own internet-based multimedia sports and entertainment company it would be fantastic. Not sure if they'd (especially Simmons) be able to make the same kind of money in the short term, but long term it could end up making them more money. I recently read that Leo Laporte (www.twit.tv) is probably making over $1 Million per year doing a technology-based multimedia company. -------------------- - Richie

Lately, every day I download the 'cast, I keep waiting for the news that he is wrapping it up in a week / month...
Dave is far more talented and has a far more unique voice than so many people with a bigger platform in the media... -------------------- PEOPLE WANT DUCKS...

Here's the thing. These sorts of threads are always dicey just because they open the door for ESPN bashing. And let's try and avoid discussions regarding The Dave's contract. But I don't think there would be a problem with discussing what you'd like to see The Dave do in the coming year, regardless of the other factors involved. Personally, I'd like to see him star in a sitcom where he's entrusted with raising a chimp. That would be nice. Or I'd like to see him and The Ed in some sort of buddy picture. |

Did anybody catch Simmons and Tollan casually mention that they had pitched an idea (or a pilot?) to HBO for some sports show? -------------------- - Richie

I missed that exchange in the Tollan 'cast but he briefly mentioned that in the Huffington Post interview:

Dave needs to be on a police show so he can 1) have to run around a lot with his swishy hand and 2) Bust out his hypothetical horatio lines. Dave might not be the best cop on the beat but he'll have the most grit. It can even take place in Pittsburgh if need be and we'll make sure that Dick Banks can write the theme song. Maybe we could even partner up Dave with The Ed. Now there's a show I would watch. |

I think this show would take place in Las Vegas where DD is going undercover to investigate an illegal babyfighting ring. -------------------- Gambling Champion of The World - May 29, 2009 - November 16, 2009

This results in the Dave shooting the Ed to avoid giving him $1500 and a bowling ball. Unfortunately, the Ed milks his death scene for an additional 36 minutes. Anyway, if Dave sticks with podcasting as a part- to full-time gig, he pretty much has to stay at ESPN, right? Are there any commercially viable sports podcasts (that aren't just podcasted versions of radio/TV) that aren't distributed through ESPN? -------------------- Uruk-Hai: 6/30/08

I want my daily Dameshek podcast. Dave's work is easily my fave of anybody podcasting today, and I'll listen to him no matter where he goes...although I gotta say dochielomn's idea of doing a cop show with a chimp has some entertainment possibilites, just so long as he carries a blaster rather than a traditional handgun. Although, mostly I'm with Mike Dell in that anything featuring Shek and a chimp would be gold.
No matter what goes down, I want whatever is best for Dave and the glory that is his daily podcast! -------------------- |
